Sarah Sonsthagen to present Division of Biology Seminar

Sarah Sonsthagen, assistant unit leader at the Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, will present her research, "The Arctic in a Changing Environment: Examples in Wildlife," as part of the Division of Biology Seminar Series at 3:30 p.m. Monday, May 1, in 221 Ackert Hall.
The environment is constantly changing — whether those changes are seasonal, annual, or anthropogenically induced. Animals have evolved mechanisms to respond to those changes, and the capacity to move underlies populations' response to change. Migration to follow favorable seasonal climates, dispersal by individuals to occupy "better" breeding habitat, or range shifts over time to track long-term changes in climate. These responses have implications for the genetic composition of populations and species over time. Sonsthagen will highlight a few projects on behavioral and evolutionary responses of species and populations occupying the Arctic that address the overarching aim of her research program; how do populations respond to ecological and climatic change?
