Cristy Portales-Reyes to present Division of Biology Seminar

Submitted by Division of Biology

Cristy Portales-Reyes, assistant professor in the department of biology at St. Louis University, will present her research titled "Ecosystem Transitions in Terrestrial Plant Communities" as part of the Division of Biology Seminar Series at 3 p.m. Monday, April 17, in the K-State Alumni Center's Tadtman Board Room.

Global change can cause shifts in plant communities that are difficult to reverse. These observed transitions in ecosystem state may result from crossing tipping points in systems with alternative attractors or could represent alternative community trajectories toward a common stable point. Informed by insights from long-term field experiments, cross-site synthesis and ecological theory, Portales-Reyes will discuss mechanisms that could promote transitions to alternative ecosystem states as well as strategies to prevent diversity loss following perturbations.
