Rachel Levitt recognized as Professor of the Week

Submitted by Candace LaBerge

Professor of the Week

Rachel Levitt, teaching assistant professor of social transformation studies, was recognized as Professor of the Week at the Feb. 15 women's home basketball game. Faculty Senate, the Office of the President, K-State Athletics and the Division of Communications and Marketing wish to recognize Levitt's contributions to K-State.

Levitt joined the K-State faculty in 2017 and holds a doctorate in American studies and two graduate certificates: one in women's studies and the other in race and social justice from the University of New Mexico. Levitt's seminars on queer rights and the law, social movements and introduction to gender, women, and sexuality studies have been student favorites.

Levitt has had a profound impact on students at K-State and had been recognized by multiple awards, including the Charlie Award for exemplary work as an advisor, the Davids-Dunham Award by the College of Arts and Sciences Diversity Committee for excellence as a teacher and scholar and the William L. Stamey Award for Undergraduate Teaching. Most recently, Levitt earned the LGBT Resource Center's Esteemed Faculty Award for support and advocacy for queer students.

On campus, Levitt does significant diversity, equity, inclusion and justice work as the chair of the Transgender Taskforce and co-chair of the LGBTQ Faculty Staff Alliance. Levitt also continues to serve as the co-chair of K-State's queer studies minor, supporting students who want to learn about queer history, politics and how to support LGBTQ folks in various professions and workplaces.

Off campus, Levitt is co-chair of the Flint Hills Human Rights Project, a social justice nonprofit aimed at making the lives of queer people more livable.
