Weekly global religious, spiritual and nonreligious observance information

Submitted by Stefan Yates

The President's Committee on Religion, Spirituality and Nonreligious Diversity presents the global observance information for Dec. 4-10.

Dec. 6 Feast of St. Nicholas — Christian, Catholic and Eastern
Celebration of St. Nicholas, patron saint of children and role model for gift giving. Many churches are named for this saint. The Dutch brought the tradition to New York where, over time, he became Santa Claus.

Dec. 8 Rohatsu — Bodhi Day — Buddhist
Celebration of the enlightenment of the Buddha. Traditionally, a candle is lit every evening for 30 days, symbolizing enlightenment.

Immaculate Conception of Mary — Christian
A celebration of the conception of Mary by her mother St. Anne, without any stain of sin. This day is also known as the Holy Day of Obligation.

The President's Committee on Religious, Spiritual and Nonreligious Diversity welcomes those of all global religious, spiritual and nonreligious commitments. Further, we welcome any suggestions, questions or other comments. Please contact the committee chair, Bev Earles, at earles@k-state.edu.
