Amy Hagerman to present Agricultural Economics Seminar Sept. 1

Submitted by Mary Bowen

Amy Hagerman, assistant professor in the department of agricultural economics at Oklahoma State University, will present "'Do Good Work': Recruiting and Developing Extension Faculty That Excel" for the Agricultural Economics Seminar Series at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, in 342 Waters Hall.

Hagerman will share information from a two-part special issue of Agricultural Economics Teaching Resources focused on extension education and teaching, with several articles that address the ongoing challenge of finding job candidates that are well positioned to succeed in extension roles. This presentation will overview challenges and factors for success drawn directly from the experiences of early career extension specialists across the U.S. It will be complemented by other articles addressing: actions an individual or department can implement to develop the next generation of faculty; engagement of international students in extension; and using graduate competitions to give students a taste of extension.

Hagerman is working on issues related to agriculture and food policy. Before joining Oklahoma State University in June 2018, Hagerman spent seven years with the United States Department of Agriculture working on economic consequence assessments of trade and animal health policies on U.S. agricultural industries. Hagerman focuses her integrated extension and research program on the understanding and managing of the risks of agriculture, including animal health, extreme weather and market fluctuations.
