Online Course Design Institute offered to assist those teaching or developing online courses

Submitted by Ashley Nietfeld

As part of their commitment to support faculty who currently teach or are interested in teaching in online course modalities, Global Campus, the Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus and the Teaching and Learning Center are offering an Online Course Design Institute in both the summer and fall terms.

These five-week offerings are for K-State instructors who are currently teaching or plan to develop an online course in the next year. The institute is offered completely online to provide instructors the opportunity to experience the learner’s perspective. Synchronous sessions will be offered through Zoom and other course components will be provided asynchronously.

The course covers best practices for teaching online while offering practical applications. Through the course, participants will gain higher confidence in the ability to teach online and learn meaningful instructor-to-student and student-to-student interaction techniques. Participants completing all requirements will earn a certificate of completion.

This program is based on a Backward Design course building model that walks participants through drafting course goals and objectives, course mapping, and assignment and assessment design. Participants will engage in five modules.

  • Module 1: Teaching Persona, Philosophy and Practice.
  • Module 2: Fundamentals of Online Teaching and Learning.
  • Module 3: Tools for Integrating Technology into Teaching and Learning.
  • Module 4: Student Success in Online Teaching and Learning.
  • Module 5: Assessment in Online Teaching and Learning.

The Online Course Development Institute is provided at no cost, but limited seats are available. Basic knowledge of Canvas is required. If you need Canvas training prior to the institute or have any questions about the program, please contact Trina McCarty, instructional designer at Global Campus, or Lisa Shappee, director for instructional design and faculty support at K-State Salina. Those interested in the institute can register online for the appropriate session.
