K-State geographer contributes to Public Health Study

Submitted by Chuck Martin

Douglas Goodin, professor of the geography department, is co-author of a recent paper published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health on the impact of climate change on public health in Botswana.

The study, which was published with colleagues at Virginia Tech, documents the expected increase in diarrheal disease in Botswana as a result of forecasted increases in temperature and decreases in precipitation. The research suggests that hotter and drier conditions would begin earlier in the season and persist longer, increasing the occurrence of diarrheal disease, a persistent public health problem in Botswana and other arid nations of Africa. Goodin conducted the climate change analysis in the study.
