Raghavendra Amachawadi, Travis Haug recognized as Professor and Professional Staff of the Week
Raghavendra Amachawadi, assistant professor of food animal therapeutics in the College of Veterinary Medicine, and Travis Haug, program/project administrator in the kinesiology department in the College of Health and Human Sciences, were recognized as Professor and Professional Staff of the Week at the Nov. 4 men's home basketball game.
Faculty Senate, the Office of the President, K-State Athletics and the Division of Communications and Marketing wish to recognize their contributions to K-State.
Amachawadi started his professional academic career as a research assistant professor in the diagnostic medicine/pathobiology department in the College of Veterinary Medicine at K-State in July 2015. In 2017, he joined the clinical sciences department, in the position he currently holds.
Amachawadi's passion is in research on infectious diseases of animals, specifically on therapeutic and prophylactic use of antibiotics, systems approach to antimicrobial resistance in cattle and swine production, evaluation of alternatives to replace antibiotic use, and antimicrobial stewardship in veterinary medicine. Amachawadi has been the principal investigator or collaborator on more than $3.4 million in extramural funding research projects. In the last four years, Amachawadi has served as the major professor to four master's and two doctoral students. Additionally, Amachawadi is well known for his interest and effort in mentoring a number of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and undergraduate students in the college. In the last four years, he has served as a research mentor for more than 30 undergraduate graduates in his laboratory. A few of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or undergraduate students have been recognized for outstanding research and presentations in scientific conferences. He has also hosted four visiting scholars from Asia and Africa who have received training in antimicrobial resistance research. In 2020, he was recognized with an International Collaboration Award from the K-State Office of International Programs.
Haug joined the kinesiology department in 2015. He goes above and beyond in his role for the department and in his time there, he has completely turned around the physical activity program that's open to the public. It went from being in the red to making enough profit to buy new equipment, support student scholarships and even support part of his own position. While there were declines in revenue due to the COVID-19 shutdown, those are on the way back up.
Haug also handles many other things in the department, which he carries out with intention and care. If there is an issue, Haug will work on a way to solve it. He is applauded by his unit for the good work he accomplishes and the work ethic with which he carries it out. He is a perfect example of who the university wants to recognize for this award.
