Alice Boyle receives award and gives plenary lecture at binational ornithology conference

Submitted by Division of Biology

Alice Boyle, associate professor in the Division of Biology, was one of two senior plenary speakers at the recent joint virtual meeting of the American Ornithological Society and the Society of Canadian Ornithologists.

The title of Boyle's talk was "Why didn't I think of this before? Rain, movement, and changing perspectives on tropical and grassland birds."

As part of this talk, she described the main ideas in a paper published in Trends in Ecology and Evolution last year, along with former K-State doctoral student Elsie Shogren, University of Rochester; and Jeff Brawn, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

On behalf of all three authors, Boyle also accepted the prestigious Katma Award for this paper at the conference. The award is given to a paper published in the previous two years in any scientific journal and recognizes papers proposing ideas or testing theories that replace current dogma or settled opinion and that could change the course of thinking about the biology of birds.
