Powercat Financial announces peer financial counselors for 2021-2022

Submitted by Jodi Kaus

Powercat Financial has selected peer financial counselors for the 2021-2022 year.

Peer financial counselors assist students with their financial questions and college financial planning decisions, as well as provide free financial workshops and events for students. This is a unique on-campus internship opportunity for students studying in financial-related programs such as personal financial planning, business finance, accounting, family and consumer economics education, agribusiness and economics.

The following students will serve as new peer financial counselors:

  • Eli McDonald, graduate assistant, Overland Park.
  • Kolby Stein, Spearville.
  • Samantha Thompson, Caney.
  • Abram Mugler and Megan Klug, Manhattan.
  • Ryan Kohr, Cottonwood Falls.
  • Jackie Koski, Dayton, Ohio.
  • R.J. Salmen, Lenexa.

The following students are returning peer financial counselors:

  • Cameron Jones, Lenexa.
  • Laura Peterson, Assaria.
  • Cal Shimkus, Oxford.
  • Alex Miller, Overland Park.
  • Anabelle Sanko, Holdrege, Nebraska.

Twenty-one additional students will join Powercat Financial's Student Advisory Board to support the mission of increasing students' financial well-being. The students will be responsible for connecting students with the financial services of Powercat Financial and hosting interactive financial events throughout the year.

"As I reflect back on my time on campus, Powercat Financial has been the most beneficial organization I was a part of," said former peer financial counselor, Kaden Stein, Spearville. "Now that I'm looking to buy a house, insurance and all that comes with 'adulting,' being a counselor is still paying dividends, and I'm sure will never stop doing so! The amount I learned, not only about financial information but how to communicate with others and understand their needs, is unmatched by any other experience I had on campus. I'm very fortunate to have been a small part of such an amazing program."
