Carroll to present 'Reducing classroom microaggressions through cultural humility'

Doris Carroll, associate professor of special education, counseling and student affairs, will present "Reducing classroom microaggressions through cultural humility" from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, via Zoom.
Microaggressions in the classroom disrupt the learning process for students and faculty alike. Faculty must recognize microaggressions and find ways to reduce their power and presence. During this program, Carroll describes these brief, daily, verbal or behavioral humiliations that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial or gender slights or insults. Faculty will learn to reduce such comments using cultural humility, a way of being that encompasses intrapersonal and interpersonal cultural tools to recognize one’s own cultural values while being other-focused by showing respect and curiosity about others' cultural beliefs rather than being arrogant or presumptuous.
