March into the arts at Kansas State University

March will be the perfect time to spring into the arts with exhibitions, recitals, performances and more at Kansas State University.
The following events, all free unless otherwise indicated, are sponsored by the university's McCain Performance Series; the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance; and the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art. They include:
* The exhibition "Konza: Sculpture by John Douglas Powers" is on display through July at the Beach Museum of Art. Powers' kinetic sculpture, which evokes the Konza Prairie near Manhattan, is constructed from brass, aluminum and stainless steel.
* The Beach Museum of Art's collaborative, interdisciplinary exhibition the "Museum of Wonder" is available through Oct. 12. The exhibition, in the Pelton and Hyle Family Galleries, celebrates Kansas State University's sesquicentennial and land-grant heritage and showcases artifacts from numerous university departments.
* Homeschool Tuesday at the Beach Museum Art will be from 1-2:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 5. The cost is $3 per child, or $1.50 for Friends of the Beach Museum of Art members. Reservations are required; call 785-532-7718 or email klwalk@k-state.edu. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Cancellation notice is requested to serve those on the waiting list.
* Guest tubist Alexander Lapins will perform a solo recital at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, in All Faiths Chapel Lapin is a senior lecturer at the Northern Arizona University, where he teaches applied tuba and euphonium, chamber music, brass methods, and history of rock music.
* Flute students of Karen McLaughlin Large, assistant professor of music, will perform a studio recital at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, in All Faiths Chapel.
* Independent curator James W. Johnson will discuss the Beach Museum of Art exhibition of John Boyd's printmaking that captures the humor and darkness in his art. The presentation will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 7 at the museum. A reception will follow in the UMB Theater.
* The School of Music, Theatre, and Dance will present the Mozart opera "The Marriage of Figaro" at 7:30 p.m. March 7-9 in McCain Auditorium. Tickets cost $8-$16, plus applicable taxes and fees. * An exhibition honoring John Boyd as the Friends of the Beach Museum of Art's 2013 gift print artist opens Friday, March 8, and runs through Sunday, May 26. "Good Boy, Bad Boy: The Prints of John Boyd" captures the humor and darkness of the noted printmaker and papermaker.
* Music faculty clarinetist Tod Kerstetter, professor of music; soprano Amy Rosine, assistant professor of music; French hornist Jacqueline Fassler-Kerstetter, associate professor of music; and pianist Amanda Arrington, instructor of music, will perform a recital as part of the Hale Library Recital Series in the Hemisphere Room of Hale Library at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 8. * The university will host the annual Tubaphonium Festival and Bassoon Afternoon on Saturday, March 9. The event is coordinated by Steve Maxwell, assistant professor of tuba, and Susan Maxwell, instructor of bassoon. Students will participate in coaching, small and large ensembles, and may receive a private lesson. A final concert will take place at 4 p.m. in 204 McCain Auditorium.
* The K-State Wind Ensemble, directed by Frank Tracz, professor of music, and the K-State Wind Symphony, directed by Don Linn, instructor of music, will present a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 10, in McCain Auditorium.
* The Kansas State University University Band, directed by Frank Tracz, and the K-State Wind Symphony, directed by Don Linn, will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 11, in McCain Auditorium.
* Mummenschanz, a performance company that combines dance, theater, and puppetry in its revolutionary presentation of mime art, will visit McCain Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 12. Tickets for this McCain Performance Series event cost $16-$42, plus applicable taxes and fees. * The K-State Jazz Bands, directed by Wayne Goins, professor of music, will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, in Forum Hall at the K-State Student Union.
* The Beach Museum will host a "Meet the Music" event in conjunction with the university's music program at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 13.
* The university's Jazz Combos, directed by Wayne Goins, professor of jazz, will perform a concert in Union Station at the K-State Student Union at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 13.
* The music program's general student recital will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 14, in All Faiths Chapel. Students from the program's string, wind, brass, percussion, keyboard and voice divisions will perform.
* Sally Pemberton will discuss her experience researching the career of her grandfather Murdock Pemberton, a Kansas native and New Yorker magazine's first art critic, from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 14. A reception will follow with Pemberton's book, "Portrait of Murdock Pemberton," on sale for a reduced price of $75.
* The McCain Performance Series will present the classical-crossover group The Celtic Tenors at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 16, in McCain Auditorium. Tickets cost $14-$55, plus applicable taxes and fees, and can be purchased at the McCain Auditorium box office, by phone at 785-532-6428 or online at http://www.k-state.edu/mccain.

* Students from the music program's tuba and euphonium studio will present a recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, in All Faiths Chapel. The students are taught by Steve Maxwell, assistant professor of tuba.
* K-State Libraries and the department of art will host New York-based artist Fred Wilson at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 28, in 114 Willard Hall.
* Guest trumpet artist John Ellis will perform a solo recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 28, in All Faiths Chapel. Ellis is a professor of music at State University of New York-Potsdam's Crane School of Music, where he teaches trumpet and the history of rock and roll. He has appeared with a variety of artists, including the Moody Blues, Calgary Philharmonic, David Clayton-Thomas, Diana Krall, Tony Bennett and Anne Murray.
* The university's Trumpet Ensemble and the Trumpet Ensemble from the Crane School of Music at the State University of New York-Potsdam will share a 7:30 p.m. concert in All Faiths Chapel on Friday, March 29. The university ensemble is coordinated by Gary Mortenson, professor of music and director of the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance; and the Crane School of Music ensemble is coordinated by John Ellis, professor of music at the school.
