Submitted by Mary Rankin

Behrooz Mirafzal, associate professor and director of the Smart Power Electronics and Control Systems Research Group in the Mike Wiegers Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Kansas State University, led a research effort on renewable energy whose findings resulted in a journal paper awarded third prize by the Renewable Energy Committee of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Industry Application Society.

Including co-authors Aswad Adib and Jacob Lamb, the three were recognized for their work, "Ancillary Services via VSIs in Microgrids with Maximum DC-Bus Voltage Utilization," which was published in 2019 in the journal IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications.

Mirafzal had been advising professor for both Adib and Lamb while they completed their doctoral studies at K-State. Adib is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, and Lamb is a senior engineer at Rockwell Automation in Mequon, Wisconsin.
