K-State Book Network announces award opportunities

Submitted by Karin Westman

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

The K-State Book Network announces two award opportunities: one for students and one for faculty and staff.

The K-State Book Network invites students to share their experience of Henrietta Lacks. What aspect of her story has made a lasting impact?

This experience can be shared through a nonfiction essay, creative writing, music, video, visual art, a filmed performance art or some other medium. Entries should indicate the basis for the experience, such as Rebecca Skloot’s book, the conversation with the Lacks family, a classroom discussion or another event or program or reading selection.

The contest is open to all K-State students. The winner will receive a $150 Varney’s book scholarship. For submission procedures, see http://www.k-state.edu/ksbn/studentaward.html.

The K-State Book Network also invites submissions from faculty or staff members who have created learning activities related to this year’s common reading selection, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.” One outstanding activity will be selected based on the following criteria: creative application of theme from the book, engagement of students in a program, project, or activity, and demonstrated enthusiasm for enhancing the educational experience at K-State. For submission procedures see http://www.k-state.edu/ksbn/facultyaward.html.

Winners of both awards will be recognized at the launch of the 2013 book selection in spring 2013. Entries are due by Dec. 16 to ksbn@k-state.edu.
