From 'Teatime to Tailgates': Cookbook celebrates university's 150 years of food history

Submitted by Communications and Marketing

Kansas State University is marking its sesquicentennial in 2013, and one faculty member is cooking up a special way to celebrate.

Jane P. Marshall, instructor of hospitality management and dietetics and communications coordinator for the College of Human Ecology, is writing "Teatime to Tailgates: 150 Years at the K-State Table." The college plans to publish the cookbook in late summer 2013.

"Teatime to Tailgates" aims to explore how food has been intertwined with the various facets of life at the university since its founding and the role food has played in making memories for K-Staters for 150 years. Food is at the center of many aspects of university life, Marshall said, from classes where students learn about food production and consumption, to sporting events, to the "freshman 15," to graduation parties.

The cookbook also will look at the university's influence on food on a global scale and include recipes from campus dining halls and the K-State Student Union, to name a few.

While food is at the center of "Teatime to Tailgates," Marshall said the recipes themselves are really not what the project is about.

"The most important part will be the people -- the faculty, staff, alumni and students who have built our food legacy," she said.

Marshall is still accepting food-related memories from alumni, faculty, staff and students about their time at the university for possible inclusion in her book. Stories and recipes may be sent to: Jane P. Marshall, 121 Justin Hall, Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS 66502; or by email to jpm2@k-state.edu. Stories should include your name, telephone number and approximate date of the event.
