JMC researchers recognized by national broadcast association

Submitted by Tom Hallaq

Several researchers from the A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications at K-State have had their work recognized by the Broadcast Education Association paper competitions, including three faculty members and a graduate student.

Raluca Cozma and Tom Hallaq authored the paper "'All the News That's Fit to Tweet' College TV Stations' Use of Twitter." The paper was awarded as the first-place winner in the Open Category of the Interactive Media and Emerging Technologies Division. The content analysis examines how award-winning student-run TV stations use Twitter to promote their work. Similar to research conducted about college newspapers, Cozma and Hallaq's study found frequency of tweeting was the strongest predictor of Twitter success.

Alec Tefertiller and graduate student Quan Long's paper, "China's new mania for live streaming: Gender differences in motives and uses of social live streaming services," was awarded first-place winner of the Interactive Media and Emerging Technologies Division Debut Paper category. Their paper examined gender differences in social live streaming services use by focusing on audience needs. The study's results found men are more likely to watch live game broadcasting than women, while women's favorite is host live shows and that men's interaction with social live streaming services is more positive than women's.

Both papers will be presented by the authors at the annual Broadcast Education Association national conference April 7-10 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
