Office of International Programs announces spring 2017 Vernon C. Larson Lecture Series

Submitted by Mary K. Pyle

The Office of International Programs announces its spring 2017 Vernon C. Larson Lecture Series.

"The Vernon Larson Series is the longest-running lecture series at the university and is named for one of the university's earliest and respected international education leader and bridge builder," said Grant Chapman, vice provost for international administration in the Office of International Programs. "Vernon's legacy is evident today and this lecture series is a direct tie in with K-State's 2025 plan of internationalizing the campus."

Spring 2017 programs and dates:

  • "Art Education: Through the Lens of Social Entrepreneurship" will be presented by Trina Harlow from 1-2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, in 21 Bluemont Hall. Harlow is K-State's College of Education coordinator of art education and a 25-year art educator who has taught in Uganda, Ecuador, Switzerland, as well as Texas and now in Kansas. She currently serves as the volunteer education outreach coordinator for the International Folk Art Alliance in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Two additional students will be featured at the presentation: Muneera Alonazi, graduate student in curriculum and instruction and K-12 art teacher from Saudi Arabia; and Marie Taylor, undergraduate student in art education. Light refreshments will be served.

  • "Situation and Perspectives of the Paraguayan Beef Industry" will be presented by Marcos Medina from 11 a.m. to noon March 7 in 123 Leadership Studies Building. Medina, the Paraguayan vice minister of livestock and K-State alumnus, will provide an overview of the importance of beef to the country's economy as well as discuss collaboration opportunities with agriculture departments at K-State.
  • "Teach, Serve, Learn," a panel of service-learning leaders will share how to engage for the common good at 4 p.m. March 14 at the Berney Family Welcome Center Theater. Hear from Teach For America, the U.S. Peace Corps and College Advising Corps, and learn about how education in environments with great need can change the world for students and teachers who are impacted by the lives of those they serve.

"International partnerships between K-State and overseas institutions are important and beneficial to all in the community. This has a special significance when the leader of an overseas institution is one of our alumni. The visit of vice minister Dr. Marcos Medina is an honor to us and it strengthens the ties between his country and our institution," said Marcellus Caldas, assistant provost of international faculty collaboration and educational programs in the Office of International Programs.
