Legislative Update
The Legislature will have multiple legislative hearings and reviews of budget committee recommendations this week. On Monday, Jan. 30, the House Appropriations Committee received the report from the House Higher Education Budget Committee for all of higher education. The Budget Committee recommended the governor's budget for fiscal year 2017. The report will be posted on the governmental relations website.
On Wednesday, Feb. 1, the House Appropriations Committee will hold a hearing on HB 2109. This legislation allows Kansas State University to sell three tracks of land: a small part of Marlatt Park on the east side of Seth Child Road; a small triangular piece of land in the University Research Park; and the site of the Pure Bred Beef Unit currently occupies.
In other action this week, the House Federal and State Affairs Committee will have hearings on Wednesday, Feb. 1, on HB 2042 concealed carry licensure amendments under the personal and family protection act; and HB 2074 creating a permanent exemption for certain entities from the public buildings law under the personal and family protection act. This act is the act which includes the exemption until July 1, 2017, prohibiting certain weapons on campus. Read more about these bills online.
In action last week, the House Higher Education Budget Committee heard testimony from President Myers on the governor's recommendations for fiscal year 2017. The president's testimony has been posted to the governmental relations website.
Also last week the Senate Federal and State Affairs Committee heard testimony on SB 53 which creates a permanent exemption for certain entities from the public buildings law under the personal and family protection act. No action was taken on this bill at the hearing, however, the chair announced the committee may take action during the week of Jan. 30.
