Legislative Update

Submitted by Sue Peterson

The House Higher Education Budget Committee this week will discuss the governor's budget recommendations for FY17. President Myers will present testimony to the committee on Jan. 24. The president's testimony will be posted to the governmental relations website

In activity at the Legislature on Jan. 18, John Floros, dean of the College of Agriculture and director of K-State Research and Extension, testified before the House Agriculture Committee and provided the 2017 Annual Legislative Update.

Kansas Higher Education was celebrated at the State Capitol on Jan. 19. The Kansas Board of Regents, six state universities, Washburn University, 19 community colleges and six technical colleges hosted the first-ever Higher Education Day in the State Capitol on Jan. 19. This event was established to highlight all the higher education institutions and the value of higher education to Kansas citizens. The day was capped off with K-State Call Hall ice cream for all legislators, their staff and Capitol visitors.

Correction to Governor's Recommendations to the 2017 Kansas Legislature: Provide 50 full scholarships to the first university or college able to offer a bachelor's degree for $15,000 for the complete degree. The Jan. 17 Legislative Update stated $15,000 annually. The Office of Governmental Relations regrets the error.

Please see the weekly updates every Tuesday in K-State Today through the final adjournment. In addition, the Office of Government Relations will host Kansas Legislative Review Sessions Feb. 3 and Feb. 17 in the K-State Student Union's Big 12 Room; March 3, March 17 and March 31 in Hale Library's Hemisphere Room; and April 14 and April 28 in 21 Bluemont Hall. These sessions are open to the public and feel free to bring a brownbag lunch.
