Legislative update May 5
The Kansas Legislature convened on April 29 for the Legislative Veto Session. The Legislature is restricted to 90 days unless both houses vote by a 2/3 majority to extend the legislative session beyond the limit.
This week the House Education Committee will have hearings on Senate Bill 193. This legislation would create a "Prospectus" for students and their parents to assist with making decisions regarding the degree programs the students might pursue in the institutions. Larry Moeder, assistant vice president for student life, director of Student Financial Assistance and director of admissions, will testify at the hearing at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday. The focus of the Legislature this week will be on revenue to fund the Fiscal 2016 and 2017 budget. The budget, which is being considered by a joint House and Senate Conference Committee, does not meet the constitutional requirement to balance expenditures with revenues. The Legislature must close a gap of $800 million in order to balance the state's budget. These tax and revenue issues will be at the top of the list of business before the Legislature adjourns for the year.
