Getting started

Academic advising is one of the most important activities we engage in at Kansas State University. Through advising, we help students establish their academic and career goals and then guide them through the courses and activities which will enable them to accomplish these goals.

As you start your academic advising journey at K-State, please check out the following resources.

On-boarding document

• This on-boarding document may be helpful to new advisors and their supervisors as they navigate the process.

Training and development

• Advisor 101 is designed to provide academic advisors with information they need to be successful at Kansas State University. This program is for anyone with an academic advisor role, both primary-role and faculty advisors, and should complement college/department specific information. It was created by advisors, for advisors. Fill out this qualtrics form for access to the canvas course.

Technology access and training

• KSIS is K-State's student information system. Access to KSIS is foundational, and will be needed to access other platforms.
• Navigate allows academic advisors and student support services at Kansas State University to provide consistent and coordinated care for students. It is the preferred platform for appointment scheduling, note taking, and academic planning. Learn more about getting access!

Advising organizations

• K-State Advisor Forum membership is composed of primary role and faculty advisors from every college at Kansas State University, including academic counselors from the Division of Academic Success and Student Affairs and Leadership Studies. The Forum brings together advisors from across campus to receive informative updates on university-wide services and meet socially throughout the school year. The forum meets once a month except during the summer. Contact Todd (TJ) Duntz at tduntz@ksu.edu to get added to listserv and Canvas page.
• KAAN (Kansas Academic Advising Network) (Links to an external site.) is the state's advising organization hosts a yearly conference. This organization also has funding for professional development.
• NACADA (the Global Community for Academic Advising) (links to an external site)is housed at K-State. NACADA provides professional development for advisors in the form of regional, national, and international conferences each year. Kansas State University is part of Region 7. (Links to an external site.)Region 7 encompasses the states of Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Missouri. Each year one of these states will host the Region 7 conference. K-State advisors can attend biannual (winter/summer) Advising Institutes, which are sponsored by NACADA.
