This section of the Academic Advising website provides tools and perspectives to aid advisors as they help students realize the benefits of good advising.  

Given the critical importance of good advising for both the student and the institution, Kansas State University encourages all academic advisors to approach their advising responsibilities with a “Developmental Advising” mindset.  What is developmental advising?  The following statements help to articulate the distinction between a developmental approach and interactions that are only focused on questions of course selection.

“Advising is a process in which advisor and advisee enter a dynamic relationship respectful of the student's concerns. Ideally, the advisor serves as teacher and guide in an interactive partnership aimed at enhancing the student's self-awareness and fulfillment.” O'Banion, T. (1972). An academic advising model. “Developmental counseling or advising is concerned not only with a specific personal or vocational decision but also with facilitating the student's rational processes, environmental and interpersonal interactions, behavior awareness and problem-solving, decision-making, and evaluation skills.” Crookston, B.
