Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety

Did you know a pedestrian is prohibited from suddenly leaving the curb and entering a roadway? As a pedestrian, it is your responsibility to make yourself visible and understand vehicles may not always stop.

Did you know a bicyclist has to obey the same traffic laws as the driver of a motor vehicle? This means the riding of bicycles on pedestrian sidewalks is prohibited. Violators may receive a warning or a traffic citation depending on the situation.

These and other important laws are designed to increase your safety. University police are available to provide education for bicyclists and pedestrians about rules regarding crosswalk and bicycle laws.

Pedestrian safety is no accident.

STOP

  • Utilize crosswalks and intersections.

  • Obey crossing signals.

  • Remove headphones or put down your cell phone.

  • Be alert to engine noise or vehicle lights.

LOOK

  • Look both ways for several seconds.

  • Make eye contact with drivers.

WALK

  • Look both ways again before stepping into the street.

  • Make sure the driver sees you.

  • Pay attention to your surroundings.

  • Don't assume vehicles will stop.

  • Cross as quickly as possible.

Bicycle Safety Tips

When traveling on roads a bicyclist is considered a vehicle and must obey the same traffic laws as other motorists. It is illegal to wear headphones while riding your bike because it can impair your senses. Additionally, if you bicycle while intoxicated you will be held to the same standards as other motorists and may be issued a DUI.

  • Stop at red lights and stop signs.

  • Pay attention to lane markers.

  • Ride near the curb, traveling in the same direction as traffic.

  • Use a light on the front and a red reflector or red light on the back of your bike while riding at night.
