$5,000 Marjorie Schoch Fellowship

Bret McCandless, Music

Bret Robert McCandless of Overland Park, Kan., has been awarded a Fellowship worth $5,000 by The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi—the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.

McCandless, the son of Tim and Jo McCandless, received bachelor's degrees in Music History and Interdisciplinary Social Science from Kansas State University. He will continue studies in Musicology and Library Science at Indiana University Bloomington.

McCandless is among 57 students nationwide to receive a Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship. Since its creation in 1932, the Fellowship Program has become one of the Society's most visible and financially well-supported endeavors, allocating $345,000 annually to deserving students for first-year graduate or professional study.

Currently, 51 Fellowships of $5,000 and six of $15,000 are awarded each year. The selection process for the Phi Kappa Phi Fellowships is based on the applicants' evidence of graduate potential, undergraduate academic achievement, service and leadership experience, letters of recommendation, personal statement of educational perspective and career goals, and acceptance at an approved graduate or professional program.

Josef Lang, Architecture

Josef Lang of Bellevue, Neb., recently was awarded a Study Abroad Grant worth $1,000 from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi—the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Lang is one of 50 students nationwide to receive the award.

Currently a senior majoring in interior architecture and product design at Kansas State University, Lang will use the grant to study abroad in Denmark.

$500 Awarded

Barbara Amoah, Entomology

Barbara Amoah of Manhattan, Kansas, recently was awarded a Love of Learning award worth $500. She is one of 147 recipients nationwide to receive the award.

Amoah was initiated into the Society in 2013 at Kansas State University. She currently is pursuing a Ph.D. in entomology at Kansas State University. Amoah plans to use funds from the award for travel to the National Entomological Society of America Conference in Austin, Texas.
