Mary Beth Kirkham presented
the award to Alfred Cochran.

We are very pleased to present the 2013 Phi Kappa Phi Artist Award to Dr. Alfred Cochran, Professor of Music.

 

The following citation was read at the presentation.

Our Artist Award recipient this year is Dr. Alfred Cochran, he earned a bachelor of Music Education from the University of Memphis, a Master of Music in Saxophone performance and a Ph.D. in Musicology from the Catholic University of America.

He joined Kansas State University Music faculty in 1979 after teaching high school for two years and is currently Professor of Music.  He has served K-State in multiple roles including serving as Associate Provost and as President of the Faculty Senate.  He has published 0ver 25 refereed publications, made over 30 professional paper presentations and 11 invited addresses.

His career as a saxophonist includes performance in all 50 states, service for four years as part of the US Army Jazz Ambassadors and also the US Armed Forces Bicentennial Band as a soloist.  His students note his excellence in teaching with creativity and humor to bring the best out of each of his students.  His expectations are inspiring, motivating, and challenging.

He is active in the community including serving as an advocate for abused and neglected children.
