Garden Food Safety Toolkit
The Garden Food Safety Toolkit is a hands-on educational resource designed to help young gardeners develop healthy habits when growing, harvesting, and preparing fresh fruits and vegetables. Whether you’re leading a school garden, community plot, or youth garden club, this ready-to-go toolkit brings food safety to life through interactive lessons and real-world skills.
Fresh produce is a leading source of foodborne illness in the U.S. According to a CDC study that analyzed data over a 10-year period, produce was responsible for nearly half of all foodborne illnesses, with leafy vegetables
being the most common source. Because fruits and vegetables are often eaten
raw, it’s especially important for young gardeners to learn how to handle them
safely.
This resource is brought to you by the Partnership for Food Safety Education. It is intended for grades 3-5, but modifications are available for younger and older students. They also have many other curricula and programs to help teach food safety.
