Alfalfa Weevil Update - 04/25/25

Alfalfa weevil counts were conducted early this week due to forecast moisture. Even in the shorter interval between scouting (1-2 day reduction), evident increases in feeding pressure were noted in untreated stands:

Fortunately, with decent growing conditions, many stands aren’t exhibiting the heavy injury symptoms noted the past couple of seasons even as numbers continue to increase.

While I have received reports (inevitable) of treatment failures, at least at the three sites above where scouting was re-initiated again this week (10-14 days after insecticide application): numbers remained below treatment threshold. With good growing conditions, these stands should be very close to harvest stage before weevil numbers require additional insecticide applications.
