Bagworms and Japanese beetles now active in Kansas

Horticultural Entomology and Plant Protection Specialist Dr. Raymond Cloyd says two insect pests are active now: bagworm caterpillars and Japanese beetle adults. Both pests can cause visible damage to trees, shrubs and ornamental plants if they are not managed early.

Bagworms feed on a wide range of trees and shrubs, and their protective bags can make them harder to spot until damage appears. Japanese beetle adults feed on leaves and flowers, often leaving plants looking skeletonized. The two publications explain each insect’s biology, the type of damage they cause and how to scout for problems early in the growing season. They also provide management options to help reduce plant injury.

The publications, Bagworm (MF3474) and Japanese Beetle (MF3488), are available to read or download for free from the online K‑State Extension bookstore.
