Beware of Evergy utility scam
Evergy is reporting a utility scam. See the details from their website below.
Scammers are sending fake text messages to Evergy customers. The texts claim that the customer has overpaid their bill and is due for a refund. The message directs customers to click to a fake website that appears to be Evergy and enter personal financial account information.
This is a scam. Neither the text nor website are from Evergy. If you receive a text like this:
- DO NOT CLICK ON THE LINK
- Report it through our scam form
- Delete the message and block the number
A sense of URGENCY
All utility scams contain a false sense of urgency to make you afraid that something terrible will happen if you don’t act immediately. Take your time, ask for details and identification. If you’re still unsure, hang up (or close the door) and call Evergy directly. You can contact our customer care team at 1-888-471-5275 (Missouri and Kansas City metro customers) or 1-800-383-1183 (Kansas customers). These are the ONLY two official phone numbers for Evergy customer support.
Unusual payment methods
Utility scams will also often include a request for you to pay with a prepaid debit card, gift cards or through a third-party app. Scammers do this because these payment methods are not traceable, and it is difficult to get the money back once it is lost.
Evergy will NEVER ask a customer to purchase a prepaid debit card to pay for service.
Utility scams are becoming more widespread, especially as scammers increase the tactics they use to defraud and deprive customers. Threatening phone calls, fake websites, and requests for immediate payment to frighten and intimidate customers are some of the methods that scammers use to get money or personal information from customers.
Evergy offers customer programs and works with organizations that offer financial assistance to our customers. However, any call, text, or email a customer receives offering a straight discount is fraud.
Evergy is regulated by state commissions in Kansas and Missouri. As a regulated utility, we go through a detailed and thorough process with each state commission to make any changes to our rates or to gain approval of special programs.
