K-State prioritizes campus safety when making winter weather decisions. Updates about campus operations are shared through K-State Alerts, the K-State Safe app, email and the university website.
Winter doesn’t officially start until Dec. 21, but preparations already are underway to ensure that students, faculty and staff receive timely updates if severe weather affects safety, classes or operations on the Manhattan, Salina and Olathe campuses.
Although the university rarely cancels classes or modifies operations, the safety of the Kansas State University community is always the top priority. Each campus makes independent decisions based on local weather. Input comes from many sources, including on-campus teams and the National Weather Service, and helps determine campus operations.
Changes to campus operations will be communicated through K-State Alerts, the K-State Safe app, the university website, e-mail and other means as necessary.
All students, faculty and staff are automatically enrolled in K-State Alerts, but if you need to update your contact information or manage settings, visit the K-State Alerts webpage for instructions.
What to do in case of winter weather
Faculty, students and supervisors all play a role in staying informed. You’re encouraged to review the university’s inclement weather policy and the remote work and inclement weather FAQ so you know what to expect and where to go for information.
- Faculty: Plan ahead for potential disruptions and clearly communicate expectations to your students.
- Students: Notify instructors immediately if you cannot safely attend class.
- Supervisors: Review departmental policies, set expectations with employees and inform essential staff in advance if they are required to report during a storm.
Students, faculty and staff commuting to the Manhattan campus should also be aware of the safety measures taken by the City of Manhattan. During winter weather, some streets may be closed. The City of Manhattan will communicate closures via roadway message boards, news media, Everbridge and social media accounts.
