Bala Natarajan named University Distinguished Professor

Bala Natarajan

Bala Natarajan, professor in the Mike Wiegers Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and director of the cyber-physical systems and wireless innovations, or CPSWin, group, has received the lifetime distinction of University Distinguished Professor — Kansas State University's highest academic title.

Bala Natarajan points at a screen while teachingNatarajan's work is centered on how complex systems function and how they can be controlled and managed. His expertise spans mathematical modeling, design and analysis, all of which help develop new theoretical and applied solutions to enhance the operational efficiency and resilience of cyber-physical systems, such as smart grid and smart health systems.

"Foundational theoretical work, integrated with interdisciplinary approaches, is essential for advancing science and ensuring societal impact," Natarajan said. "I enjoy exploring new problem spaces. I am glad I got the opportunity to use my core analytical skills to solve real-world problems and work on many projects that have had a tangible impact."

Through his leadership in CPSWin and other collaborative efforts, Natarajan focuses on systems that better connect the digital and physical worlds, including intelligent power grids, resilient communication networks and advanced sensing technologies. His work centers on a commitment to innovation and the development of foundational theory and engineering solutions applicable to a wide range of problems, from critical infrastructure planning and operation to cutting-edge biomedical research.

In the classroom, Natarajan brings that same sense of purpose, teaching a wide range of engineering topics while mentoring students as they grow into researchers and problem-solvers. Throughout his K-State career, he has mentored over 34 doctoral and 26 masters students. Natarajan currently holds the Clair N. Palmer and Sara Palmer Electrical Engineering Professorship and is a Steve Hsu Keystone Research Scholar. His scholarly contributions include a graduate textbook, multiple book chapters and more than 320 refereed journal and conference publications.

"My most meaningful moments at K-State have been working with students as they grow into confident researchers and leaders, building interdisciplinary collaborations, and strengthening our graduate education and global partnership efforts," Natarajan said. "Legacy, to me, is about what endures: students who lead, ideas that matter and collaborations that transcend boundaries. This recognition reinforces my commitment to all three."
