A new connection to national research networks
K-State's ORAU membership is building momentum for collaboration, funding and student opportunities.
Kansas State University is stepping into a broader national research network with its recent designation as a sponsoring institution in the Oak Ridge Associated Universities consortium, a group that connects universities with federal agencies, national laboratories and industry partners.
For Amir Bahadori, who represented K-State at a recent ORAU consortium meeting, the moment was more than individual recognition. It reflected the university's growing presence in national research partnerships and a sense of momentum that is continuing to build.
In practice, the designation provides access to opportunities that were previously harder to reach. Faculty have more direct access to early-stage funding, collaborative research opportunities and projects aligned with federal priorities.
For students, it means greater awareness of and access to competitive fellowships and internships at national laboratories and federal agencies. Together, those connections help position K-State as a stronger partner in large, multi-institutional research efforts.
That kind of connection is at the center of how ORAU works. The consortium is designed to bring academia, government and industry into closer alignment, creating space for research and workforce development to move forward together.
At K-State, that approach builds on long-standing strengths in areas like biosecurity, food systems, energy and water — fields where research is closely tied to real-world challenges. Through ORAU, those connections can happen more quickly and at a larger scale, making possible opportunities that are often difficult to attain as a single institution.
Looking ahead, that momentum is expected to translate into more practical learning opportunities for students, from national laboratory internships to federal research fellowships and collaborative projects that connect them more directly to careers in government, industry and beyond.
