K-State honors Jason Coleman as Faculty of the Week

A man with short brown hair and a red-check button-up shirt smiles for a professional portrait. Jason Coleman, professor and academic services librarian with K-State Libraries, will be honored as Faculty of the Week at the women's home basketball game on Feb. 21.

Coleman joined K-State Libraries as a faculty instructor in 1998, became an assistant professor in 2010, earned tenure and promotion to associate professor in 2015, and was promoted to professor in 2023.

He has held several positions during his 26-year career at K-State Libraries, including reference generalist, evening services coordinator, undergraduate and community services librarian, head of library user services, and, most recently, academic services librarian. Coleman specializes in AI literacy, information literacy within STEM disciplines and virtual reference services.

As a STEM librarian, he frequently provides guest lectures, workshops, and consultations on strategies and techniques for finding, evaluating, organizing and citing information. In addition to co-editing the book "Library Services for Online Patrons: A Manual for Facilitating Access, Learning, and Engagement," he has published 15 peer-reviewed journal articles and five book chapters.

Coleman is a frequent presenter at national library conferences and has chaired numerous professional committees, including the Association of College and Research Libraries' AI Competencies for Library Workers Task Force.

He is a two-time recipient of K-State Libraries' Brice G. Hobrock Distinguished Faculty Award. Since early 2023, he has been exploring AI-enhanced research tools to help students and faculty understand what they can and cannot contribute to traditional research methods. Coleman became a librarian because he is passionate about promoting critical thinking in information production and consumption.

The Faculty and Professional Staff of the Week recognitions are coordinated by Faculty Senate, the Office of the President and K-State Athletics. Recipients are selected by Faculty Senate caucuses, provided tickets to a home basketball game of their choice and honored during halftime as a small token of appreciation for their service to K-State.
