College of Architecture, Planning & Design recognizes Populous as its 2026 Firm of the Year
Kansas State University's College of Architecture, Planning & Design, or APDesign, has selected Populous as the recipient of the 2026 Firm of the Year Award. This distinguished honor recognizes Populous' transformative impact on the built environment and its long-standing dedication to excellence, innovation and mentorship in the design profession.
The Firm of the Year Award is presented annually to a design practice that has demonstrated exemplary leadership, a significant influence on the profession, and a strong partnership with APDesign and its students. Populous has consistently embodied these values, providing meaningful engagement with the college and championing opportunities for future design leaders.
Populous was selected as the 2026 Firm of the Year based on the following areas of outstanding engagement:
- Direct support for student scholarships
- Faculty support and endowed leadership chairs
- Recruitment, internships and full-time employment opportunities for APDesign graduates
- Research collaboration and sponsorship
- Professional mentorship and participation in academic initiatives
"Populous is a global leader in shaping extraordinary experiences through design," said Michael McClure, dean of the College of Architecture, Planning & Design. "Their commitment to collaboration, innovation and the student experience continues to strengthen our programs and inspire the next generation of architects and designers. We are proud to recognize Populous as our 2026 Firm of the Year."
A global design firm with colleagues spanning four continents, Populous creates environments that amplify the joy felt in shared human moments — from stadiums and entertainment venues to civic experiences and cultural destinations. Their approach aligns closely with APDesign's mission to prepare students for impactful, community-centered careers that enrich the places where people gather.
"We are honored to be named the 2026 Firm of the Year by Kansas State University's College of Architecture, Planning & Design," said Bruce Miller, Populous CEO. "Kansas State has long been a strong source of talent, producing world-class designers who strengthen our industry. With nearly 100 proud Wildcats in our firm, we look forward to continued collaboration and partnership with the APDesign program and the next generation of design leaders."
The award will be presented during a special reception at the 2026 Design Expo in Regnier Hall, bringing together students, faculty, alumni and industry partners to celebrate Populous' achievements and continued commitment to APDesign.
This event will also highlight the enduring professional partnerships that underpin student success at Kansas State University. Through mentorship, career engagement and hands-on learning opportunities, firms like Populous play a critical role in advancing APDesign's nationally recognized programs and sustaining the college's culture of design excellence.
