Make sure you know what to do when winter weather strikes

As the winter season approaches, preparations are underway to ensure that students, faculty and staff receive timely updates if severe weather affects safety, classes or operations on the Manhattan, Salina and Olathe campuses.

The university rarely cancels classes or modifies operations; however, the safety of the K-State community is always the top priority. Each campus makes independent decisions based on local weather. Input comes from many sources, including on-campus teams and the National Weather Service, and helps determine campus operations.

Changes to campus operations will be communicated through K-State Alerts, the university website, e-mail, the K-State Safe app and other means as appropriate.

All students, faculty and staff are automatically enrolled in K-State Alerts, but if you need to update your contact information or manage settings, visit the K-State Alerts webpage for instructions.

What you should do in case of winter weather

Faculty, students and supervisors all play a role in staying informed. You’re encouraged to review the university’s inclement weather guidelines, so you know what to expect and where to go for information.

  • Faculty: Plan ahead for potential disruptions and clearly communicate expectations to your students.
  • Students: Notify instructors immediately if you cannot safely attend class.
  • Supervisors: Review departmental policies, set expectations with employees and inform essential staff in advance if they are required to report during a storm.

Students, faculty and staff commuting to the Manhattan campus via Anderson Avenue should be aware of safety measures being taken by the City of Manhattan. During winter weather, the portion of Anderson Avenue between Sunset and Connecticut Avenues may be closed. The City of Manhattan will communicate the closures via roadway message boards, Everbridge and social media accounts. A detour will be in place; please plan potential alternate routes for your commute.

Weather can be unpredictable, so a little planning can go a long way in keeping the K-State community safe, informed and ready for whatever the season brings.
