Inspiring the next generation of business leaders
Nearly 80 high school students from across the country for two immersive, multiday Summer Institute sessions.
This summer, the Center for Principled Business in Kansas State University's College of Business Administration welcomed nearly 80 high school students from across the country for two immersive, multiday Summer Institute sessions.
Designed to introduce students to the foundations of business and the role it plays in advancing opportunity and prosperity, these residential experiences emphasized the importance of building organizations that create value and address real-world needs. Now in its fourth year, the program continues to fill quickly, with both sessions reaching capacity and waitlists forming each summer.
Throughout their time on campus, participants engaged with K-State faculty, staff and students while exploring core business concepts like value creation, innovation and free enterprise. They were introduced to each of the College of Business Administration's academic disciplines — including finance, marketing, management and accounting — and experienced firsthand the resources and spaces that support student success. Sessions were intentionally interactive, incorporating hands-on activities, guest speakers and team-based challenges to help students connect theory with practice.
The Summer Institute also serves as a valuable professional development opportunity for current K-State students. Business majors selected as program mentors gain experience in leadership, team facilitation and peer coaching — skills they can apply in the classroom and beyond. These students serve as role models, helping participants feel welcome on campus while sharing insight into college life and career preparation. For many high school attendees, the relationships they formed with their mentors became a highlight of the experience.
"We want students to leave not only with a better understanding of business," said Marcia Hornung, Menard family director of the Center for Principled Business, "but also with a real sense of connection to the college and excitement about the possibilities that lie beyond high school."
Each participant received a $1,000 scholarship to support future studies in the College of Business Administration. Additional scholarship awards, ranging from $500 to $1,000, were awarded to top-performing teams in the program's pitch competition.
The institutes were made possible through the support of lead sponsor Koch Inc., along with other corporate and individual partners who share the commitment to preparing students for values-driven business careers.
