Gregory Flax appointed interim assistant vice president and chief technology officer

Gregory Flax has been appointed as the interim assistant vice president and chief technology officer for Kansas State University, effective June 8. In this position, he will work with the chief information officer to manage daily IT operations and client services, with a focus on improving infrastructure costs, performance and user satisfaction.

Flax brings more than 30 years of technical and supervisory experience across various industries, particularly in developing and managing large and complex technology environments within higher education. He joined the university in 2021 as the IT service desk operations director, where he provided strategic planning and leadership for the IT Service Desk, IT Equipment Checkout, and Classroom A/V Tech Support.

Recently, Flax has gained significant experience and demonstrated strategic leadership in his role as the interim assistant vice president for academic and research IT. He led the university's IT Transformation Phase I and Phase II initiatives, which resulted in the hiring of seven IT directors for academic colleges and major units.

"During his time at K-State, Gregory has transformed IT Service Desk operations, enhancing efficiency to meet the demands of an ever-evolving technology landscape," said Thomas Bunton, associate vice president and chief information officer. "He has established strong relationships and collaborated effectively with various departments and divisions across K-State's three campuses. His ongoing commitment to advancing technology in support of the university's mission positions him well to lead its IT initiatives."

He started his career at Midwest Energy and transitioned to Koch Industries, Alterra Bank and ECCO Select roles. Flax is a former business owner who successfully launched two businesses from scratch. He has worked in higher education at the University of Kansas and the University of Missouri.

Flax has a master's in business management and a bachelor's degree in business administration and data processing from Fort Hays State University. He has PMI education with expertise in project management and is Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certified.
