Archive it or lose it: Preserve K-State’s legacy
Tuesday, April 29, 2025
Did you know that university records you create as part of your job, including webpages, might need to be transferred to the university archives?
The university archives serve as a valuable repository for records pertaining to the institution's history, catering to the research needs of administration, faculty, staff, students and the public. Ensuring the transfer of records to the archives is a crucial step, as it facilitates future research endeavors for staff and faculty members. By preserving and granting access to these records, the continuity of knowledge and support of ongoing scholarly pursuits within the university community and beyond is ensured.
University archives staff encourage you to transfer your university records to the university archives if you are retiring, leaving the university or if your office retention schedule designates your records as archival.
Along with traditional documents, webpages serve as important records of the university’s history and operations. Before making significant edits or deleting a webpage, it’s essential to archive it properly. Archiving preserves the university’s legacy, ensures compliance with state recordkeeping guidelines, and safeguards critical information for legal or regulatory purposes. Additionally, maintaining archived web pages allows faculty, staff and researchers to easily access and reference past content when needed.
If you are ready to transfer your records to the university archives or have questions about the process, please contact Danielle Hall, university records manager, at dnhall@k-state.edu or Ryan Leimkuehler, university archivist, at rleimkue@k-state.edu.
To view the collections, you can visit the Archives and special collections online or contact the archives reference desk at libsc@k-state.edu.
