Big 12 Fellowships recognize outstanding faculty, encourage new collaboration

Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013

MANHATTAN -- Six Kansas State University assistant professors have been named Big 12 Faculty Fellows for their scholarly activities in teaching, research and service.

The Big 12 Faculty Fellowship program offers faculty the opportunity to travel to other Big 12 institutions to participate in cross mentoring among universities, develop working relationships and exchange ideas with others.

"This year's Big 12 Faculty Fellows from Kansas State University represent outstanding scholars from a variety of disciplines across campus," said April Mason, Kansas State University provost and senior vice president. "We look forward to seeing the connections and working relationships they will forge this academic year. These collaborations with other institutions will play a crucial role as we become a Top 50 public research university."

The faculty recipients for the 2013-2014 academic year include:

* Jonathan Aguilar, assistant professor at the Southwest Research and Extension Center, Garden City

* Huston Gibson, assistant professor of landscape architecture/regional & community planning

* Mindy Markham, assistant professor of family studies and human services, K-State Salina

* Caroline Tushabe, assistant professor of women's studies

* Erin Wiersma, assistant professor of art

* Bill Zhang, assistant professor of architectural engineering and construction science

The chief academic officers from Big 12 universities created the faculty fellowship program and recently added a mentoring and networking component to encourage new faculty to establish connections with outstanding individuals in their disciplines at other Big 12 universities.

The Big 12 Faculty Fellowships are open to all faculty who are tenure-track or tenured. Kansas State University will give this year's recipients up to $2,500 toward transportation, lodging and meals.
