Durband new director of School of Family Studies and Human Services

MANHATTAN — Dorothy "Dottie" Bagwell Durband, founding chair of the community, family and addiction services department in the College of Human Services at Texas Tech University, has been named director of the School of Family Studies and Human Services at Kansas State University.
"I am extremely excited that Dr. Durband will be joining us. She brings a breadth of experience and expertise. Her leadership will be a critical asset as we strive to provide a transformational education experience to our students and move toward K-State 2025," said John Buckwalter, dean of the College of Human Ecology, which is home to the School of Family Studies and Human Services.
Her appointment is effective in July.
Durband received a doctorate from Virginia Tech, a master's degree in family studies from Texas Woman's University and bachelor's degree in family life and environment from Louisiana State University.
She is a professor in the personal financial planning department at Texas Tech in Lubbock and founding director of Red to Black, the financial coaching program at the university. She has been a manager for the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Greater Fort Worth and of the Gulf Coast Area in Texas.
In 2013, Durband was recognized as one of the Top 25 Women Professors in Texas and has received the Texas Tech University System Chancellor's Council Distinguished Teaching Award and the College of Human Services Outstanding Organization Adviser Award.
"I am honored to serve as the next director of the School of Family Studies and Human Services. I look forward to what we will accomplish together," Durband said.
Durband has received nearly $2.9 million in external funding in the areas of financial planning and Early Head Start programs. She has published broadly in the area of financial planning and counseling and was editor, with Kansas State University's Sonya Britt, of Student Financial Literacy: Campus-Based Program Development.
She is an accredited financial counselor.
Undergraduate programs in the School of Family Studies and Human Services are early childhood education, general family studies and human services, communication sciences and disorders, and personal financial planning. Graduate programs add marriage and family therapy and life-span human development. Master of Science degrees also are available through distance learning in family and community services, personal financial planning and youth development.
