Students receive academic support via new scholarships

MANHATTAN -- Students from across the country are reaping the rewards of financial assistance provided by Kansas State University's Division of Continuing Education. This spring marks the first offering of the Division of Continuing Education Scholarship for Distance Education Students, helping the division achieve its goal of increased scholarship funding for distance students.

The new scholarship provides $900 to undergraduate students and $1,200 to graduate students. Recipients must be enrolled in a Kansas State University distance education degree program.

The division also awarded the spring 2013 Maurine Allison O'Bannon Memorial Scholarships. These $1,000 awards are for undergraduate and graduate students in university distance education programs.

In addition, the university's office of diversity provided a $1,000 scholarship through the Division of Continuing Education to a deserving distance education student for spring 2013.

The postmark deadline to apply for the fall 2013 Division of Continuing Education Scholarship for Distance Education Students, the Maurine Allison O'Bannon Memorial Scholarship and the new Allan D. Sicat Scholarship is Monday, April 1. Application guidelines and additional financial aid and scholarship opportunities for distance education students are available at http://www.dce.k-state.edu/students/services/financial-aid.

The spring 2013 scholarship recipients include:

Ashley MacKinnon, senior in dietetics, Fort Riley, Division of Continuing Education Scholarship; Daina Bitters, senior in human ecology, Lawrence, Division of Continuing Education Scholarship; and Rebecca Sombatchareun, junior in family studies and human services, Pleasanton, office of diversity scholarship.

From out-of-state: Angela Giancaterino, master's student in academic advising, Los Angeles, Calif., O'Bannon scholarship; Kerri Langdon, master's student in academic advising, Wonder Lake, Ill., Division of Continuing Education Scholarship; Patrick Gere, master's student in civil engineering, South Portland, Maine, Division of Continuing Education Scholarship; Melissa Routt, junior in general business administration, St. Charles, Mo., O'Bannon scholarship; Claudia Montoya Nunez, master's student in agribusiness, Bayonne, N.J., O'Bannon scholarship; Karyn Raney, master's student in academic advising, Schenectady, N.Y., Division of Continuing Education Scholarship; Kyra Thornburg, master's student in academic advising, Allentown, Pa., Division of Continuing Education Scholarship; Tiffany Weight, master's student in academic advising, Logan, Utah, Division of Continuing Education Scholarship; and Kristina Cale, senior in dietetics, Seattle, Wash.,Division of Continuing Education Scholarship.
