Sesquicentennial book about university's food heritage earns special honor

MANHATTAN — Jane P. Marshall wrote "Teatime to Tailgates: 150 Years at the K-State Table" to celebrate Kansas State University's sesquicentennial.
Now Marshall is celebrating a special honor. Her book has been named a Kansas Notable Book of 2014 by the State Library of Kansas. Marshall is a food journalist and culinary historian who teaches food writing in the hospitality management and dietetics department in the university's College of Human Ecology.
"Teatime to Tailgates" was among 15 books earning the Notable Book honor this year. A committee of Kansas Center for the Book affiliates, fellows, librarians and authors of previous Kansas Notable Books selects books to be considered for the honor, all of which were published in the previous year. The State Library then selects the honorees. Marshall will join the other authors at a recognition ceremony Sept. 13.
"What a thrill to be in such august company — the company of the other Notable Book authors and, of course, the farmers, cooks, researchers, professors, inventors, pioneers and K-State graduates who made 'Teatime to Tailgates' possible," Marshall said
Published by the College of Human Ecology, "Teatime to Tailgates" features stories and recipes from 1863-2013 about the university's rich food heritage. The book encompasses the entire university, from Call Hall's ice cream parlor to Van Zile's dining room, from Cowboy Cabbage cooked in a cast iron pan to the K-State Student Union's Crown rolls.
The 256-page hardcover reveals "gritty professor, itchy-footed explorers and talented graduates who changed by the world by changing how people, grow, select, prepare and eat their food," Marshall said.
The book is available at locations around Manhattan, including the Flint Hills Discovery Center, Campus Bookstore at the K-State Student Union, the College of Human Ecology at 119 Justin Hall and the Riley County Historical Society.
