Video: The key to building a lasting relationship

Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014

MANHATTAN -- It's coming down to the wire and you might still be trying to figure out that perfect Valentine's Day gift. While flowers and chocolates are nice, something else might make a better gift.

Charlotte Shoup Olsen, a Kansas State University professor of family studies with a specialization in relationships, says appreciation is the key to building and maintaining a lasting relationship.

"Often times we more readily say 'thank you' when we go shopping and to the clerk who helps us than perhaps to our partner, the person that's most important to us,” Olsen said.

Instead of making a grand gesture one or two days of the year, Olsen says to focus on the everyday interactions. These daily conversations are what sustain the bond between couples.
