University, Manhattan earn national recognitions for excellence

Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013

MANHATTAN -- Great campus, great town. That's what two new rankings show about Kansas State University and Manhattan.

Business Insider, a leading business news and analysis website, has Kansas State University in its list of Top 20 best college campuses in the nation, while another ranking by Forbes magazine rates Manhattan as No. 3 in the nation for best small places for businesses and careers. The magazine credits Kansas State University students for helping shape the city's culture.

"One of the many advantages of deciding to study, teach and live in a classic college town like Manhattan and at K-State -- which happens to be two hours away from the state's major cities -- is the basic fact you want to be here. You are here by choice, not by convenience," said Pat Bosco, vice president for student life and dean of students. "This creates an incredible sense of ownership and pride among our entire K-State family. You can make a difference here. It seems like everyone is wearing purple and lots of people care."

The university checks in at No. 18 on the Business Insider list of best campuses. Kansas State University is the only school from Kansas and from the Big 12 Conference to make the list, which includes half of the Ivy League schools. Kansas State University ranks ahead of Stanford University on the list and is one of the few public schools included.

The Business Insider list is based on the recently released Princeton Review's "The Best 378 Colleges." The website used the Princeton Review's rankings in 11 categories, including facilities and services, to come up with its top campuses. The new book ranked Kansas State University highly, with Top 10 listings in the categories of great campus and community relations, student satisfaction, happiest students, quality of life and more. More information is available at http://www.businessinsider.com/best-college-campuses-2013-8.

The Forbes' business ranking is based on several metrics related to job growth, with Manhattan rated highly in education and in job growth. The magazine also calls Bill Snyder Family Stadium and Bramlage Coliseum popular sites in the Little Apple. Manhattan is the highest ranked city in Kansas and the Big 12 Conference on the list. Others listed include Ames, Iowa, No. 15; Lawrence, Kan., No. 17; Morgantown, W.V, No. 23; Waco, Texas, No. 61; and Topeka, Kan., No. 71.
