Art, music, holiday shows set for December at K-State

MANHATTAN — December is the month to catch a holiday show, special art exhibitions, a variety of concerts and much more at Kansas State University.

The following events, most free and on campus unless otherwise indicated, are sponsored by the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art, McCain Performance Series and the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance.

• Fall 2017 exhibitions available in December at the Beach Museum of Art include "Thrift Style," which runs through Dec. 16 in the Ruth Ann Wefald Gallery; "Ubiquitous: Enrico Isamu Ōyama," which runs through Dec. 23 in the Hyle Family Gallery; "Reclaimed Creations: Sayaka Ganz," which runs Dec. 9 in the Marion Pelton Gallery; and "Fronteras/Frontiers," which runs through April 1, 2018.

• In-A-Chord will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, at the University Christian Church, 2800 Claflin Road.

• Create holiday cards and decorations inspired by Mexican traditions at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Beach Museum of Art. Cost is $5 per child and children must be accompanied by an adult.

• K-State students perform jazz, tap, modern and African dances, choreographed by K-State dance faculty, in "Winter Dance '17." Shows will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, and 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, in the Mark A. Chapman Theatre at Nichols Hall. Tickets can be purchased online at ksu.universitytickets.com, by calling 785-532-6878, or at the Chapman Theatre box office, which opens one hour before show time.

• The piano studios of music faculty members Slawomir Dobrzański and Agustin Muriago will perform at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Unitarian Fellowship Hall, 481 Zeandale Road, Manhattan.

• The Horn Studio Recital will be at 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, in McCain Auditorium's Kirmser Hall.

• The K-State Trumpet Ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, in All Faiths Chapel.

• Martina McBride brings "The Joy of Christmas" to the McCain Performance Series at 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2. Tickets are available at the McCain Auditorium box office, online at k-state.edu/mccain, or by calling 785-532-6428.

The McCain Holiday Home Tour will be from 11a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3. 

• The Festival of Holiday Choral Music will be at 2:30 and 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 601 Poyntz Ave. Tickets are $8.50 at the door.

• The K-State Music Theory Class Composition Recital will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, in All Faiths Chapel.

• Homeschool Tuesday is 1-2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, at the Beach Museum of Art. The class will be on the exhibition "Fronteras/Frontiers." Cost is $3 per child and reservations are required by calling 785-532-7718 or email klwalk@k-state.edu. Children must be accompanied by an adult. If you need to cancel your reservation let the museum know for its wait list. The museum is part of the Blue Star Museum program, which offers military families half-price admission to all workshops and classes.

• The K-State Orchestra performs at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, in McCain Auditorium.

• Join Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus and the rest of the "Peanuts" gang as they mount a play, save a tree and uncover the true meaning of Christmas. "A Charlie Brown Christmas" will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, in McCain Auditorium as part of the McCain Performance Series. Tickets are available at the McCain Auditorium box office, online at k-state.edu/mccain, or by calling 785-532-6428.

• The K-State Concert Band, Brass Ensemble and Woodwind Ensemble perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6, in All Faiths Chapel.

• The Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony Concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, in McCain Auditorium.

• The Masterworks Chorale and University Concert Choir will present a joint performance of John Rutter's "Gloria" and Gabriel Faure's "Requiem" at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at the First United Methodist Church, 612 Poyntz Ave., Manhattan.

• Dianne Reeves performs at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, in McCain Auditorium as part of the McCain Performance Series. Tickets are available at the McCain Auditorium box office, online at k-state.edu/mccain, or by calling 785-532-6428.

• The Flint Hills Children's Choir will present "O Holy Night: Christmas Around the World" at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, in McCain Auditorium as part of the McCain Performance Series. Tickets are available at the McCain Auditorium box office, online at k-state.edu/mccain, or by calling 785-532-6428.

• ARTSmart classes for children and families will be Dec. 20-23 at the Beach Museum of Art. Participants will be introduced to Mexican culture through folk art and some basic Spanish vocabulary. Classes for toddlers and 2-year-olds will be 10:30-11 a.m. and for all ages from 4-5 p.m., both on Dec. 20; for ages 3-5 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. and for kindergarteners and up from 4-5 p.m., both Dec. 21; for all ages from 10:30-11:30 a.m. on Dec. 22; and for all ages from 1:30-2:30 p.m. on Dec. 23. Cost is $3 per child and reservations are required by calling 785-532-7718 or emailing klwalk@k-state.edu. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
