Building History
Holtz Hall was constructed in 1876 to accommodate the Department of Chemistry. Over the years, it also served as a women's gymnasium, a mathematics department, and provided counseling services. The building originally featured a large cupola and a row of clerestory windows along the roof's ridge for ventilation. However, a fire in 1900 necessitated its reconstruction. The light fixtures in Anderson Plaza, located in front of Holtz Hall, were a gift from the class of 1913 and were salvaged from the exterior of Nichols Hall after the fire.
In 1963, the building was renamed Holtz Hall in honor of "Doc" Holtz, who served 35 years at K-State, beginning in 1919. Known for his informal advising style, Holtz assisted students with career guidance, financial support, and personal issues, in addition to his roles as a teacher and freshman football coach.
