Key Components of Pay

Pay at K-State consists of several components. All employees receive base pay, while some may also receive additional compensation based on their role or the work they do.

Base Pay

Base pay is the regular pay an employee earns for doing their job. It does not include extra pay for special circumstances. Base pay is set based on the job itself — the duties and responsibilities, and the value of that work in the market.

A position’s FLSA status as nonexempt or exempt determines whether it is paid on an hourly or salaried basis and whether it is eligible for overtime pay.

  • Nonexempt employees are paid hourly and receive a fixed rate for each hour worked. Total pay each period is dependent on the number of hours worked, and employees are eligible for overtime pay under the FLSA.
  • Exempt employees are paid a salary that does not vary based on hours worked and are not eligible for overtime.

Additional Pay

Additional pay is compensation employees may receive beyond their base salary for specific circumstances or types of work, such as overtime, shift differentials, supplemental pay or pay for additional work performed. Not all employees are eligible for every type of additional pay. Eligibility depends on an employee’s job classification, FLSA status and the nature of the role.
