Graduate Program Directors

The Graduate School has recognized Dr. Nagaraja, University Distinguished Professor of Diagnostic Medicine and Pathobiology department, as a 2018-2019 Commerce Bank and W.T. Kemper Foundation Distinguished Graduate Faculty Award recipient.

Dr. T.G. Nagaraja will make a public presentation on his work at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, in the Big 12 Room of the K-State Student Union as part of the Commerce Bank and W.T. Kemper Foundation Distinguished Graduate Faculty Award. 

Interested in Recruiting McNair Scholars to your graduate program

The Graduate School has access to the 2018-2019 McNair Scholars Directory to use specifically for recruiting new graduate students. The directory includes contact information for McNair Scholars who have expressed interest in graduate studies and includes information on recent graduates, seniors and rising seniors. The directory was developed through a collaboration between the Council for Opportunity in Education and the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS).

For those not familiar with the McNair Program, the following information was included in the communication I received from CGS. "The Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program is the single largest federal effort aimed at preparing low-income, first-generation in college and minority students to pursue graduate studies. The McNair Program is funded through the U.S. Department of Education's TRIO programs and provides participants with research internships, faculty mentors, opportunities to present and publish results of their research, undergraduate teaching experience, and assistance with applying to and preparing for graduate school."

If your graduate program would like to use the directory to send information to prospective graduate students who would have had research experience as part of their undergraduate program, please contact Associate Dean Dissanayake at This is a good opportunity to increase the diversity among your graduate students.

Spring 2019 Recruitment Weekend Funding Availability

Graduate School is offering a funding opportunity to assist programs desiring to bring admitted doctoral students to campus for a spring 2019 visit.  The Graduate School will fund a limited number of graduate programs up to $5000.  To receive the maximum award, a program must have 10 or more admitted doctoral students participating in the event.  Programs that plan to bring fewer than 10 students to campus would request funding of up to $500 per student.  Programs will be expected to make the travel arrangements and provide any additional funding necessary to support activities.  Funding will be provided for doctoral applicants. Deadline for submission of the application materials is 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12, 2018.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute- 2019 Program Announcement

The Hanna H. Gray Fellows Program supports early career life scientists in academic labs across the U.S.
The HHMI seeks to increase diversity in the biomedical research community. We know that the biggest challenges in science call for diverse perspectives and original thinking. The goal of the Hanna H. Gray Fellows Program is to recruit and retain individuals from gender, racial, ethnic, and other groups underrepresented in the life sciences, including those individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. Call for faculty mentors: 2019 Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program

The Graduate School is searching for faculty mentors for the Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (SUROP) for summer 2019. SUROP is a program designed to provide research experience to undergraduate students. Deadline to express interest is Oct. 26.

Notable Scholarly Achievements Newsletter – call for fall submissions

Submissions for the fall 2018 newsletter are being accepted for accomplishments completed from July 14, 2018-October 26, 2018. Faculty members are invited to complete a brief online form to recognize their students in the next newsletter.

AAUW Fellowships and Grants

One of the world’s largest sources of funding for graduate women, American Association for University Women (AAUW) is providing $3.9 million in funding for fellowships and grants to 250 outstanding women and nonprofit organizations in the 2018–19 academic year. The following funding opportunities have application deadlines in November:

American Fellowships (Deadline: November 1, 2018)
International Fellowships (Deadline: November 15, 2018)
Career Development Grants (Deadline: November 15, 2018)

Volunteer to be a Poster Judge at Research and the State

The Graduate Student Council is calling for faculty and post-doc judge volunteers for the annual Research and the State graduate student poster session, which will be held on November 8, 2018 in the Engineering Complex atrium from 1:00 - 3:00 pm.  Volunteers must be available at 12:45 pm for at least 1.5 hours on November 8. If interested in serving as a judge, please complete a brief online form to express your interest and provide your availability for the day.

Graduate Students

Walk-in sessions are 9:00-11:00am and 2:00-4:00pm. October 22 thru 26th.

Masters and doctoral students planning to graduate in Fall 2018 are invited to attend degree check walk-in sessions. Degree analysts will be available to answer questions about graduation and commencement requirements and make sure students are on track to graduate this semester. Students are encouraged to review graduation and commencement information, especially their appropriate requirements and deadlines checklist, prior to visiting with a degree specialist.  

Scheduling Final Examinations 

Please inform doctoral students who plan to defend their dissertation this semester that is imperative to contact their assigned outside chair prior to beginning scheduling their final examination.   The outside chair should be consulted regarding the availability at the same time the student contacts members of the supervisory committee. 

Both master’s and doctoral students completing theses, reports, or dissertations should provide all members of their supervisory committee a copy of their document that has been approved by their major professor a minimum of 10 working days prior to the defense.  The Approval to Schedule Final Examination form and abstract should be submitted to the Graduate School 10 working days prior to the defense.

GSC Professional Development – Networking and Etiquette Dinner

The GSC Networking and Etiquette Dinner will feature guest speaker Anne Deluca, Assistant Director and liaison to the College of Engineering in the Career Center. She will present an interactive session about fine dining etiquette for formal and business settings, including meals that are held as part of a job interview. The event will be held November 12 in the K-State Student Union Bluemont Room, beginning with a networking period at 5:30pm, followed by dinner at 6:00pm. Advanced registration and payment of $20 are required by November 6 at 5:00pm.

2019 Art, Humanities, and Social Sciences Small Grant Program for K-State Graduate Students

The Graduate School is pleased to announce the fifth year of the Small Grant Program to support research expenses for master's and doctoral students in their final year. Grants will be up to $1,000 for research costs with funds available after January 15, 2019. Applications are due by 5 pm on November 9th. 

Building Future Faculty Program Now Accepting Applications for 2019

The 2019 Building Future Faculty (BFF) program will be offered by NC State University on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 - Friday, April 5, 2019. This all-expenses paid workshop is designed for diverse graduate students and post-doctoral students who are preparing for a career as a faculty member. 

Workshop topics include information regarding what to expect as a faculty member, a discussion of the wealth of resources available to faculty for teaching, and expectations of productivity for faculty engaged in research. During the workshop, participants will spend time with current faculty and department chairs in their discipline discussing effective strategies to prepare for an academic career, and the realities of life as a faculty member, as well as receiving personal tips and feedback. This program aims to increase faculty diversity and inclusion and to create a faculty that mirrors the increasingly diversified student population. Applications are due by Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at 11:55 pm EST.  

Chapman Center for Rural Studies Engagement Graduate Scholarship

To make the goals of the Making the Leap program a reality, the Chapman Center is on a search for two dedicated graduate students. From January 2019-December 2019, these graduate students will receive hands-on training in museum planning, management, and civic discourse. They will then work as consultants with four Kansas museums to develop plans for fundraising, exhibitions, public programming and preservation. First and second year master’s students in the College of Arts and Sciences are invited to apply. Supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, selected graduate students will receive a $25,000 scholarship.  Applications are due December 1.
