Save the Date for New Graduate Program Directors meeting
September 6, 9:30-11:00am, 121 Eisenhower Hall September 10, 3:30-5:00pm, 121 Eisenhower Hall
New graduate program directors need to attend only one of the meeting times above.
If unavailable for both meeting times, please contact Dean Shanklin to schedule a
separate meeting.
The Graduate School also is working to schedule an update meeting with all department
heads, graduate program directors, and program contact staff in early October. Meeting
information will be shared in the next newsletter.
The Graduate School and other campus support units will host welcome and orientation
activities for new graduate students admitted to graduate programs for the summer
and fall 2018 terms during the week of August 13th. A schedule of sessions and activities is available on the Graduate School website. Students
who plan to attend are asked to register in advance by August 10. Though not required
for attendance, advance registration facilitates event planning and makes for a quicker
check-in process at orientation. Graduate programs are encouraged to promote orientation
activities to their new and current graduate students.
Graduate Students
GTAs, GRAs, and GAs who were unable to attend the Health Insurance Information Session
hosted on July 30 are invited to view a video recording of the session. Information
about the KBOR health insurance plan also will be shared with incoming graduate students
at the GTA/GRA/GA orientation session on August 15.
Updates on International Student Health Insurance
- The waiver email was sent on August 1 and was sent only to those students who are
enrolled for fall semester. The waiver email will be sent at several intervals throughout
August, so international students who enroll after August 1 will still receive the
email. The deadline to submit the waiver is August 31.
- International students that have a GRA/GTA/GA can ignore the waiver email. There
is a different process for them to enroll in health insurance.
- International graduate students who do nothing and do not have a GTA/GRA/GA will be
automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) and their KSIS
account will be charged accordingly. However, they will not receive an email from
United Healthcare to access their account until mid-September. If they need a health
insurance card before that or would like access to that account sooner, they should
click on the “enroll now” option when they receive the waiver email.
- The cost for the basic Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) is $709 per semester.
The new Summary Brochure lists the costs for adding dependents
- For students who would like to purchase insurance other than United Healthcare plan
should review the new guidelines for having the waiver approved before purchasing any insurance.
This Friday, August 10, is the deadline for graduate students to complete all requirements
for being a summer 2018 graduate. Graduate students and their advisors should visit
the Graduation and Commencement page for more information and review the deadlines for graduation and ETDR submission checklists to ensure all requirements are complete by this Friday.
