Investigate Academic Performance Disparities by Race through Data Mining

KSUnite DEIB Conference Day 3 - November 16, 2022 - Concurrent Conference Sessions Period 3 (8:30am-9:30am)
Cottonwood Room

This study compares the academic performance of underrepresented minority (URM) students and non-URM students in K-state using two approaches. In the first approach, their performance was compared directly at a population level. In the second approach, URM students were paired with non-URM students who have the same or very similar background at first, and then their academic performance was compared based on paired cases. Academic performance is measured by their first-year GPA and first-year retention rate in this study. Conclusions from the two approaches were different: the first approach at a population level indicates a huge gap between their academic performance, while the second approach shows there is no gap, or the gap is much smaller.
